Private Pilates in Phoenix: Why One-on-One Changes Everything
Trent McDonald, Pilates Instructor · Movement Specialist
Most people come to Pilates after something else stopped working. A back that gave out. A body that kept getting injured. A trainer who pushed hard but left them feeling worse. They arrive here cautious, and usually surprised by what happens next.
I teach private Pilates in Phoenix, AZ. One client, one session, no group class template. Every session is built around what your body actually needs that day, not a sequence I've already decided on.

Why does private instruction matter?
Group classes are designed for the average body. If you've spent any time in one, you already know yours isn't average. Private instruction means the work is yours: the pace, the load, the focus, all of it.
My background in movement assessment and manual bodywork changes how I teach. Before we work, I look at how you're moving and where the system is breaking down. That means we're not building strength on top of a problem. We're addressing what's underneath it at the same time.
The approach
Pilates is the structure. Assessment is the starting point. The session that follows is built from both.
I draw on training in SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment), Original Strength, and MovNat alongside Pilates instruction. For clients who also need soft tissue work, whether restriction, pain, or limited range, that is available in the same session or separately.
Nothing is added for the sake of it. If it doesn't serve where you're trying to go, it doesn't go in the session.
Who I work with
Clients rebuilding after injury. People managing chronic pain or joint issues who want to get stronger without making things worse. Athletes who want to move more efficiently. Anyone who has tried group classes and felt like the instruction wasn't quite designed for their body. It wasn't.
Common questions
Is private Pilates better than a group class?
If your body has a history, yes. Group classes serve the average body; private sessions are built around yours, which is what makes them safe and productive for rehab, pain, and performance goals alike.
Do I need experience?
No. Every session starts from an assessment of how you move, so the work meets you exactly where you are.
What if I also have pain or restriction?
Soft tissue and fascial work can be folded into the same session. That combination under one roof is the core of how this practice works.
